Customer support comparison

Freshdesk Freddy AI vs Zendesk AI agents for Shopify

Both sell an AI agent that resolves customer requests on top of a full helpdesk. The sharpest difference is the billable event: Freshworks bills a flat session every time its AI engages, resolved or not. Zendesk bills only when the AI resolves the request without a human. One price is low and predictable, the other can never bill you for a failure.

The short answer

You want the lowest published per-interaction AI price

Choose Freddy AI Agent. Extra sessions cost $49 per 100, or $0.49 each, and one session covers a full conversation window: 24 hours for chat, 72 hours for email, with unlimited AI replies inside the window. If your AI resolves most of what it touches, no per-resolution product in this comparison set undercuts that arithmetic.

You want to pay only when the AI actually resolves

Choose Zendesk AI agents. Billing follows the outcome: $1.50 per automated resolution with committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and every Suite and Support plan includes 5 resolutions per agent per month (10 on Suite Professional). Conversations the AI fails to resolve cost nothing in resolution fees.

You run a lean Shopify store and watch the platform bill

Both start at $19 per agent per month on annual billing: Freshdesk Growth and Zendesk Support Team. The included AI differs. Freshdesk gives 500 free sessions once per account, which can cover a long pilot at low volume but never renews. Zendesk gives a recurring monthly resolution allowance that resets forever.

What each one counts as billable

A Freddy session is a unique interaction between an end-user and the AI Agent. On chat, everything within 24 hours from the first message counts as one session; on email, a 72-hour window from the customer's first email, regardless of how many replies the AI sends. The session bills whether or not the problem is solved. Extra sessions come in packs of 100 for $49, the packs expire at the end of your billing cycle with no carry-over and no proration, and auto-recharge buys another pack when the balance drops to 50 sessions unless you disable it. When sessions run out the AI stops responding and hands conversations to live agents.

A Zendesk automated resolution is a request the AI agent resolves without escalation to a human. The monthly allowance per agent is recurring (5 on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, capped at 10,000 per year), and additional resolutions cost $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.

The same week of support produces two different invoices. At Freshworks, every AI-touched conversation is on the bill, resolved or not: a deployment resolving 70 percent still pays for the remaining 30 percent. At Zendesk, only the resolved share is billed, but the resolution rate is adjudicated by the platform and you carry seat costs whether or not the AI works.

What 1,000 support conversations actually cost

A scenario, not a benchmark: a store with 1,000 AI-touched conversations a month and a 70 percent resolution rate. At Freshworks, 1,000 sessions is ten packs at $49, so $490 for the month, or $0.70 per resolved conversation, plus Growth seats from $19 per agent per month on annual billing. At Zendesk, 700 automated resolutions at the committed rate cost $1,050 for the month, reduced by the included per-agent allowance, plus Suite seats from $55 per agent per month. The 300 unresolved conversations add nothing to the Zendesk resolution bill.

The crossover is arithmetic. Freddy's effective cost per resolved conversation is $0.49 divided by your resolution rate: it matches Zendesk's $1.50 committed rate at roughly 33 percent resolution and the $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate at roughly 25 percent. Above those rates the session model costs less per resolved conversation; below them outcome billing protects you. Measure your own rate in a pilot before committing volume to either model.

Shopify fit

Freshdesk connects through the official free Shopify app (about 1,700 installs): agents see customer and order details, payment and shipping status in the ticket, and can process refunds and cancellations without leaving Freshdesk. New store connections now go through Shopify's Dev Dashboard custom-app flow, an admin setup step. The AI agent answers from your Freshdesk content and connected data.

Zendesk connects through the official Shopify for Zendesk app (16,500+ installs): customer and order details appear in the ticket sidebar, and agents process refunds and cancellations in-ticket. The AI agents act on the same connected data.

Channels and human handoff

Freddy AI Agent works on email in every Freshdesk plan and on chat through Freshdesk Omni, and hands off to your team in the Freshdesk inbox when it cannot resolve or when sessions run out. Zendesk's AI agents run across email, messaging and voice with a native handoff into the Zendesk agent workspace, including full conversation context.

Where each one can surprise you

With Freshworks: unresolved sessions still bill; packs expire with the billing cycle, so an annual cycle protects value and a monthly one can waste it; auto-recharge buys packs automatically at the 50-session threshold unless you opt out; and buying your first pack removes whatever is left of the 500 complimentary sessions. With Zendesk: you pay for seats even at low AI usage, the platform decides what counted as a resolution, and committed resolution volumes are a commitment. Review a sample of resolutions every week during the pilot and dispute what looks wrong.

The pilot we would run

Two weeks on real ticket volume, both vendors if you can. Measure per vendor: resolution rate on your own conversations, billed events for the same period, and effective cost per resolved conversation. Test the edge cases on purpose: a customer who returns inside the 24-hour chat window or the 72-hour email window (one billed session at Freshworks, possibly a second resolution at Zendesk), an order lookup that needs Shopify data, and an immediate human handoff. Your own numbers beat any rate on a pricing page.
