Customer support comparison

Tidio Lyro vs Zendesk AI agents for Shopify

Both put an AI agent in front of your customers. The sharpest difference is the billable event: Tidio charges for every conversation Lyro answers, resolved or not. Zendesk charges only when the AI resolves the request without a human. That one difference decides which vendor gets cheaper as your volume grows.

Facts checked 26 October 2026. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on benchmark. Recommendations are editorial judgment. We have not measured either product's resolution rate.

The short answer

You want to pay only for resolved tickets

Choose Zendesk AI agents. Billing is per automated resolution: a request the AI resolves with no human involved. Every Suite and Support plan includes 5 automated resolutions per agent per month (10 on Suite Professional), then $1.50 each on committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Conversations the AI fails to resolve cost you nothing in resolution fees.

You want AI on top of the helpdesk you already have

Look at Lyro AI Agent only. Tidio sells Lyro as a standalone product that it says can be added to Zendesk, Salesforce or any other help desk software, so there is no migration. Zendesk's AI agents require a Zendesk plan. If you stay on Zendesk, you can pilot both: Zendesk's own agents and Lyro standalone, on the same ticket mix.

You run a small Shopify store and watch every dollar

Lyro's entry point is low and predictable: 50 free conversations once, then paid quotas starting at $32.50 per month billed annually for 50 conversations. But read the billing rules before you scale: you pay for conversations Lyro does not resolve, and a customer who comes back after 15 quiet minutes starts a new billed conversation. At sustained volume, Zendesk's outcome billing can win even with seat costs on top.

What each one counts as billable

A Lyro conversation is any customer thread that gets at least one reply from the AI, whether or not the problem is solved. Lyro can reply many times inside one conversation and it still counts once, but the thread closes after 15 minutes of inactivity: a customer who returns later starts a new billed conversation. Lyro answers each ticket once. If Lyro hands off to a human immediately, nothing is deducted. Every Tidio project gets 50 Lyro conversations free, one time and non-renewable; paid quotas run from 50 to 1,000 conversations a month and Lyro stops replying when the quota is exhausted.

A Zendesk automated resolution is a customer request the AI agent successfully resolves without escalation to a human. Billing follows the outcome, not the attempt. Each plan bundles a monthly allowance per agent (5 on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, capped at 10,000 per year), and additional resolutions cost $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.

The same week of support can therefore produce two very different bills. At Tidio, every AI-touched conversation is on the invoice, resolved or not: a deployment resolving 70 percent still pays for the remaining 30 percent. At Zendesk, only the resolved share is billed, but you carry agent seat costs whether or not the AI works.

What 1,000 support conversations actually cost

Take a store with 1,000 support conversations a month and assume the AI resolves 70 percent. At Tidio, 1,000 Lyro conversations is the top published self-serve quota; the pricing page publishes only the $32.50 entry point (50 conversations, annual billing), and volumes above 1,000 move to a custom Plus plan, so confirm the tier price in checkout before committing. At Zendesk, 700 automated resolutions at the committed rate cost $1,050 for the month, reduced by your included per-agent allowance, plus Suite seats from $55 per agent per month on annual billing. The 300 unresolved conversations add nothing to the Zendesk resolution bill.

The crossover question is your real resolution rate. The lower it is, the more outcome billing protects you. The higher it is, the more a flat conversation quota can undercut per-resolution pricing. Both vendors market high average resolution rates; treat those as vendor claims and measure your own during a pilot.

Shopify fit

Tidio is Shopify-native in daily use: a dedicated Shopify app, order status answers inside chat, and Shopify-exclusive automation nodes for order lookup, cart recovery, discounts and free-shipping prompts. Lyro draws on your store content for answers.

Zendesk connects through the official Shopify for Zendesk app (16,500+ installs): customer and order details appear in the ticket sidebar, and agents can process refunds and cancellations without leaving Zendesk. The AI agents act on the same connected data.

Channels and human handoff

Lyro works across the channels in the Tidio inbox (chat, email, social) and hands off to your team there, or sits on top of an external helpdesk in the standalone product. Zendesk's AI agents run across email, messaging and voice with a native handoff into the Zendesk agent workspace, including full conversation context.

Where each one can surprise you

With Tidio: unresolved conversations still bill, the 15-minute thread rule can bill a returning customer twice, and when the monthly quota ends, the AI goes quiet until it resets. With Zendesk: you pay for seats even at low AI usage, the platform decides what counted as a resolution, and committed resolution volumes are a commitment. Review a sample of resolutions every week during the pilot and dispute what looks wrong.

The pilot we would run

Two weeks on real ticket volume. Measure three things per vendor: resolution rate on your own conversations, billed events for the same period, and effective cost per resolved conversation. Test the edge cases on purpose: a customer who returns after lunch, an order lookup that needs Shopify data, and an immediate human handoff. The numbers from your own store beat any rate on a pricing page.
