Customer support comparison

Gorgias vs Zendesk for ecommerce

Gorgias is the more direct choice for Shopify-first teams that want order context and ecommerce actions inside the queue. Zendesk is the broader service platform for businesses that need mature routing, governance and support across more than the store.

Facts checked 16 October 2026. We have not completed a hands-on product test. Product behaviour is sourced to vendor documentation; our recommendation is editorial judgment.

The real choice

This is not simply a small-business tool against an enterprise tool. The products start from different operating models.

Gorgias starts with the ecommerce customer and order. Its public material centres the queue on Shopify context, support automation and sales conversations. Zendesk starts with service operations: channels, ticket routing, knowledge, reporting and controls that can support many types of customer or employee request.

That makes the decision less about the longest feature list and more about where support complexity lives. If complexity is mostly in order work, Gorgias has the more relevant depth. If complexity is in organisational scale, channels, permissions or processes beyond ecommerce, Zendesk has the broader frame.

Shopify workflow

Gorgias connects Shopify customer and order information to the support workspace. Its documentation and product pages describe ecommerce actions and AI workflows that use connected store data. The practical goal is to keep agents from moving between the helpdesk, Shopify and separate tools for routine requests.

Zendesk also has a Shopify integration. Zendesk's documentation says agents can view Shopify customer and order information from a ticket, while the Web Widget or messaging can be added to the storefront. That covers an important part of the workflow, but it does not make Zendesk an ecommerce-native system by itself.

Decision rule: List the ten actions agents perform most often after opening a ticket. Compare those actions, not screenshots of the inbox.

AI automation

Both vendors now sell AI agents and measure at least part of the product by resolved conversations.

Gorgias charges its helpdesk by ticket usage rather than seats and adds an outcome-based charge for conversations resolved by AI Agent. The AI product is positioned specifically for ecommerce, including support and shopping workflows.

Zendesk AI agents work across messaging and email channels. Zendesk defines an automated resolution through its own resolution logic and manages usage through resolution allowances or tiers, depending on the account and contract. That breadth can be useful, but it makes the commercial model important to test against your real channel mix.

Do not compare vendor automation percentages. Give both systems the same anonymised contact set and score correct resolutions, safe escalations, repeat contacts and human clean-up time.

Prices and packaging checked 16 October 2026. Gorgias prices by monthly ticket volume and Zendesk per agent, so the starting prices buy different units and are not directly comparable. Treat them as orientation only. Ask both vendors for a twelve-month model at normal and peak volume, including every retained tool and add-on.

Do not migrate on positioning alone

For an existing Zendesk team, the switching cost can be larger than the software difference. Include workflow rebuilding, macros, integrations, historic reporting, training and the temporary drop in agent speed. A focused integration or automation pilot may solve the real problem without replacing the helpdesk.

For a growing Shopify team choosing from scratch, the reverse is true. Buying enterprise breadth before it is needed can add administration without improving the customer experience.

A practical pilot

  1. Export 100 to 200 representative, anonymised contacts.
  2. Tag each by intent and required back-office action.
  3. Configure the same knowledge and escalation rules.
  4. Measure correct resolution, handling time, repeat contact and setup effort.
  5. Price normal month, peak month and expected team growth.

Use our customer support ROI calculator to value the time saved, then compare the result with the benchmark library. Early benchmark pages use published evidence; AislePilot will label proprietary aggregates separately once sample thresholds are met.

Bottom line

Gorgias is the sharper tool for Shopify support operations. Zendesk is the wider platform for service complexity that extends beyond ecommerce. Choose the system that removes the most work from the actual queue, not the one with the larger AI claim.
